A size such as 40R contains two pieces of information:
40Chest Size
The number refers to the approximate chest measurement in inches.
RLength
The letter refers to the jacket length.
Understanding Jacket Sizes
Regular (R)
Generally best for men from about 5'8" to 6'0"
Long (L)
Generally best for men over 6'0"
★ These are starting points. Torso length, arm length, and overall proportions can affect which length fits best.
How to Find Your Size
Check a Jacket You Already Own
Look inside a sport coat or suit jacket that fits well for a size such as 38S, 40R, or 42L.
Try on Jackets Locally
Visit a department store or menswear retailer and try standard sport coats until you find the size and length that fit best.
Measure Your Chest
Measure around the fullest part of your chest, beneath your arms, keeping the tape level and comfortably snug.
Use Your Height for Length
Use your height as a starting point for Short, Regular, or Long sizing.
Consider Build & Frame
Athletic, broader, slimmer, or fuller builds may fit differently even at the same height and chest size.
